HOW THE
NDIS WORKS
What is the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?
The NDIS has been designed to support people with permanent and significant disability to be active members of their community.
It provides funding based on need and gives choice and control over the support received. This means you are assessed on your particular circumstances and aspirations. The funding for supports received ensures you reach your particular goals including independence, involvement in community, education, employment, and health and wellbeing.
The NDIS provides certainty that you will receive the reasonable and necessary support you require over your lifetime, giving you peace of mind. It also focuses on early intervention, at a time when getting early support can reduce the impact of disability.
Who’s who?
The NDIS was launched by the Australian Federal Government in 2013.
The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is responsible for rolling out the scheme Australia-
wide. Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) and Local Area Coordination (LAC) supports the NDIA in the rollout of the NDIS.

What is recovery?
The term ‘recovery’ is used widely throughout the mental health sector. It can have different meanings in different contexts.
The NDIA defines recovery as achieving an optimal state of personal, social and emotional wellbeing, as defined by each individual, whilst living with or recovering from a mental health condition.
