Making the Most of Your NDIS Planning Meeting

Planning meetings can feel like a big deal. They are where you share your story, your goals, and the kind of support you want in your life. With more plans now including draft budgets and rolling funding periods, it helps to walk in prepared and ready to clearly describe your needs.

Making the most of your NDIS planning meeting does not mean having all the answers. It means knowing the right questions to ask, feeling clear about what matters to you, and having the right people beside you.

Come In With Confidence

It is easy to feel like the NDIA has all the answers, but this is your meeting. Think about what you want life to look like, then use your planning meeting as a chance to set that vision in motion.

Some things that can help:

  • Talk about your budget and check if it meets your needs across the whole plan period

  • Bring evidence from health or support professionals to strengthen your requests

  • Ask for clarity if something feels confusing or unclear

  • Chat about management – whether your plan is self, agency, or plan managed, and make sure you have the flexibility you need

Always try and reflect on the daily impacts of your disability and what supports you require to overcome or lessen those impacts. Use this is as your core idea you keep coming back to.

Also remember that psychosocial disability can result episodic or changing needs, try and think about what your needs might be if you hit a rough patch. There is a clear commitment by the NDIS to fund the episodic needs of psychosocial disability which your Recovery Coach can help remind everyone of.

Plans Can Change With You

Life is not static. Your needs may grow, shrink, or shift, and that is completely okay. If your circumstances change, you can request a plan variation or reassessment. The NDIA can also update your plan if new information comes to light.

Making the most of your planning meeting means knowing you are not locked in forever. Your plan can change with you.

Stay In The Driver’s Seat

Having a flexible budget gives you more choice. But with choice comes responsibility. Staying on top of your spending means you can shape your supports in a way that really works.

You might:

  • Log into the myplace portal to keep track of your budget

  • Ask your plan manager to give you regular updates

  • Lean on your Recovery Coach for advice if you are not sure what is possible

Remember, you do not need to carry it all alone. These tools and people are there to help you feel confident and in control.
